Earth Day

A day for tomorrow, for the climate. The basis of our existence is the preservation of the diversity of wildlife – warns the 31st Hungarian and the 51st World Earth Day, the main theme of which remains the preservation of biological diversity. The over-expansion of humanity is putting pressure on wildlife, we over-consume and over-expand, this is indicated year by year by the WWF Living Planet report. Mankind's intervention in the millennial balance of nature endangers the existence of wildlife, including pollinating insects and plants. We are responsible for 60% of the loss of biodiversity, more precisely the animal feed. Nature has warned us of our vulnerability with the coronavirus - this year will be the first digital, self-organizing, community-building Earth Day! Let's do something, let's start today!

What can you do? A lot. Build a community, go green, plant trees, grow crops, compost, starve the garbage can, insulate, travel together, don't buy packaged, live without plastics, switch to eco-friendly, instead of semi-finished products eat fresh homemade, eat fewer animal products ... a gift to the environment, to your health. Today, Earth Day has become the largest self-organizing environmental movement in Hungary. A celebration to act, about the future of us all.

On the occasion of Earth Day (April 22), various events are organized around the world to raise awareness about the protection of the Earth’s natural environment. The events are coordinated by the Earth Day Network. The day is held in 175 countries and has been held in Hungary since 1990. In 2009, at the initiative of Bolivian President Evo Morales, the UN declared 22 April as “International Mother Earth Day”.

One of the slogans of the Earth Day movement is, "Who said you can't change the world?"

History

The idea was raised by John McConnell in 1969 at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco. Earth Day was first held on 21 March 1970, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

American university student Denis Hayes started a movement on the 22nd to protect the Earth and founded the Earth Day Network. Since then, he has become a researcher and expert in alternative energy sources. At the start of his movement already more than 25 million Americans stood behind him and today the movement he initiated expands to almost the entire world. More than a thousand organizations participate in it.

The next major event was the establishment of the Earth Day International News Center in California in 1989, and since then a monthly newsletter has been sent to all countries to celebrate Earth Day around the world with a variety of actions on April 22nd.

Google repeatedly reminded us of Earth Day with an animated logo, which in 2018 included an animated video message on which Jane Goodall speaks. The highlighted topic of 2018 was “plastic-free world”.

Events

•Every year since 1990, the Worldwatch Institute in Washington has published an annual report on the state of the world's environment entitled “The State of the World”.

• Organizers of the Critical Mass cycling movement often set the date of the parade on this day.

• On this day, trees are planted, drawing competitions are announced, environmental competitions, stream and village cleanings are organized by non-governmental organizations and local governments, schools.
