National Blue Trail route / part XV

distance 58.5 km; travel time 16 hours 50 minutes

This route of the Blue Trail crosses the most varied landscape of the Bakony, rich in karst phenomena. We touch gorges, spacious, bare pastures, dense forests, a plateau rich in caves and cultural values.

Leaving the vast forest of the Old Bakony, we get to know other faces of the highland. On the border of Bakonynána, we look around the picturesque, wild rock gorge of the Roman Baths, and then climb the Tési Plateau through disturbed, felled forests. The depth of the small karst plateau is made active by a diversified system of caves, and due to its prominent position, its surface has excellent conditions for the utilization of wind energy: two old windmills are the evidence.

Our journey leads downhill from Tés: during our forest trek we reach one of the legendary gorges of the mountains, the Burok Valley. On the border of Bakonykúti we reach the characteristically barren hills of the Bakony, where infinitely spacious fields open before us. In the summer heat, only the shade of pine trees relieves the area.

After the next block of forests, we find ourselves next to the Fehérvárcsurgó reservoir and the park of Károlyi Castle. In the last section, the Bakony says goodbye with a wild gorge. Finally, we arrive at Bodajk on a long unused ski resort, from where we can take a look at our next region, the Vértes.

TIPS

• Rich in museums and sights is Zirc, "the capital of the Bakony".

• Before descending to Bodajk, it is worth visiting the Károly lookout tower, which offers a panoramic view of the Gaja Gorge.

• If possible, take a detour to the Csőszpuszta Cave Research Station.

• You can view the probably most beautiful waterfall in the Bakony, the Roman bath waterfall with a very short detour. Be sure to plan it in your tour!

• If time allows, visit the Szechenyi Lookout Tower between Jásd and Tés with a short detour, which offers a great view to the north.

• In Kisgyón we find a unique facility: there are many chalets in the nature-friendly settlement for hikers. Ideal place to relax at night.
