The story of the Tichy Dry Clean

The name of the Tichy family may be familiar to many, as their dry-cleaning business has been operating in Bródy Sándor street in Budapest for many decades. Many people have already visited them, they have cleaned Sissy's wedding dress, but they also clean the curtains of the Grassalkovich castle in Gödöllő.

Ildikó and Andrea Tichy, the owners and heirs of the business told their story, which shows us how to run a successful business despite many tragedies.

-Our story goes back to World War II. Our grandmother was a store manager in the 5th District and then bought her own store in Vármegye Street. It was a laundry and dry cleaner business, which worked very well, but in the meantime came the war. My grandmother lost her business, and after the bombings they were given an apartment in the VIII. district. In 1953, she managed to reopen her shop in Bródy Sándor Street, which has been operating ever since. Our grandmother died 10 years later, so the business fell into the hands of our father, Dezső Tichy.

Finally, since 1983, the twin grandchildren, Andrea and Ildikó Tichy, have been running the business successfully with their mother.

- Our family has experienced a lot. For example, after the change of regime, they wanted us to operate as an American franchise and although the offer was very good, we wanted to maintain our independence. Over the years our profile has expanded, in addition to various textile cleaning, we also deal with leather goods, the treatment of occasion dresses and the cleaning of carpets.

The family still has a lot of work to do today, and their clientele has acquired some well-known names over the years.

- We clean the curtains of the Royal Palace of Gödöllő every year. We work together with the National Museum and the Petőfi Literary Museum. We manage the Batthyány coat, but we are also trusted with the royal cloaks, old military clothes and knight clothes, added Andrea.

Since the 2010s, another shop awaits their customers in an outstanding environment in Bank Center, providing the perfect home for their already well-known quality, unique work.
