Summer recreation

Visit an arboretum or botanical garden in Hungary! We can visit beautiful locations across the country, so wherever you travel, you can be sure to find a garden nearby. Most arboretums are open all year round, however, some are open seasonally, so it's a good idea to check in advance.

When going on rural excursions, visit the Folly Arboretum at Lake Balaton, check out the Lotus Days in the Botanical Garden of Szeged in July, drop by the Jeli Arboretum, or get to know the largest garden in Hungary, the Szarvas Arboretum, where the Mini Hungary model park can be found.

We have collected our favorites in Budapest and the Budapest metropolitan area, which – we think - are definitely worth a visit.

Botanical Garden of ELTE

season: March - October

The Eötvös Loránd University Botanical Garden is the best-known plant park in the country. The 3.1-hectare garden showcases more than 8,000 plant species both outdoors and in greenhouses.  In the greenhouses we can find non-native plants: cacti and succulents, bromeliads, orchids, palms and flowers from Australia.

Japanese garden in Zugló

The country’s first Japanese garden is nearly 100 years old and is beautiful to this day. Walking in the garden, not only can you see beautiful plants, but you can also learn a lot about Japanese culture and the Japanese soul. In the noisy city this garden is like a tiny island radiating calmness and harmony, which is simply good to visit.

Buda Arboretum

season: March - October

The 7.5-hectare Buda Arboretum is in district XI and is 5 minutes from Móricz Zsigmond körtér. The garden is home to many native plants and regularly hosts exhibitions. The garden was awarded the bird-friendly garden certification in 2006.

The primary task of the garden is to help the students of Szent István University become acquainted with ornamental gardening.

Vácrátót Arboretum

season: mid-March to October

45 minutes from Budapest is the Vácrátót Arboretum, the largest national botanical garden in Hungary. The garden of Vácrátót is deservedly famous for its stunning flora. Not only on a domestic but also on a European scale, it has a wide range of plant species - the park presents 13,000 varieties of plants.

Gödöllő Arboretum

season: all year round

The Gödöllő Arboretum is a forestry garden, the development of which dates back to 1902. The area belongs to the Pilisi Park Forest. The park has huge fields, several trails and roadside sculptures. There are 154 forest types where the tree species can be seen together with the herbaceous vegetation.
