4 recommendations of the most beautiful castles to visit in Hungary

Károlyi Castle, Fehérvárcsurgó

The building was built in a classicist style and was designed by Miklós Ybl and Heinrich Koch. The history of the castle can be traced back to 1691, when it was already owned by the Hochburg family. In 1786 after several changes of ownership, the Baroque-style castle stood here, which was owned by the Perényi family. The head of the family later mortgaged the building to György Károlyi, whose name became known because in 1825 he donated 40,000 forints to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, being its founding member. The castle now functions as a hotel, but you can visit the building several times a day with the attendance of a tour guide.A wonderful garden and lake also belong to the castle.  Walking around it we can imagine the life of nobles in the 18th century.

Rudnyánszky Castle, Budapest

Built in the 18th century, surrounded by a park, the Száraz-Rudnyánszky Castle has been renovated and awaits its visitors once again.Take a look behind the walls of the baroque castle: in its halls you can visit the permanent furniture exhibition of the Museum of Applied Arts, which exhibits the handicraft of furniture era from the 14th century to the middle of the 19th century.

Wenckheim Castle, Szabadkígyós

The castle was built in the Neo-Renaissance-eclectic style between 1875 and 1879 based on the plans of Miklós Ybl, and was consecrated on July 19, 1882.Krisztina Wenckheim told the designer nothing should be the same, nonetheless remain harmonious. She even had a wish to have as many windows as many days are in a year, as many rooms as there are weeks, and as many entrances as there are seasons.  This castle was the most modern castle of its time. The representative interior of the castle hides a chapel, a dining room, a winter garden, a library, a women’s salon, a men’s salon with a smoking room, a study and a bedroom with an alcove, however, only the library can be visited. Its furnishings and beautiful volumes reflect the life and customs of the former aristocracy.

L’Huillier–Coburg Palace, Edelény

On the estate of Edelény, Jean-François L’Huillier began the construction of the castle in 1716, asking for bricklayers, carpenters and other specialists from his regiment, the Caraffa Regiment.A task this big could only be carried out with a well-organized logistics background. The wood needed for the scaffolding, roof structure and windows were mostly transported to the site from a 20-40 km distance, however, other building materials did not have to be transported from such a distance. The most significant alterations to the castle and its surroundings that have survived to this day were completed in the times of Jean-François L’Huillier’s granddaughter, Ludmilla and her second husband, Count István Esterházy.The couple employed Ferenc Lieb, a traveller painter in Upper Hungary and entrusted him with painting six rooms. The largest contiguous rococo murals in Hungary were completed in 1770.
